It was about 10:30 p.m. and I was entering my 15th consecutive hour of working when I heard it. As I bent over to empty urine from a catheter for the umpteenth time that night,the words Mitt Romney shared with his rich donors at a May fundraiser reached my ears from the TV of one of my patients. I have to say that I was glad that the newscaster repeated it because I literallycould not believe my ears.
I was immediately angry because Romney’s “off the cuff” words made me feel small and meaningless – he called me a bum. I’m a working nurse and I couldn’t help but relate his message to my life. I felt insulted that because I have borrowed thousands of dollars in federal student loans that in Mitt’s eyes, I am somehow not a contributing member of society – that I have no worth.
