But, beneath that headline there are all sort of fascinating — and occasionally contradictory — data points in the poll that are worth further examination.  We tackle nine of them below.  You can sift through all the data from the poll right here if you want to do a bit of exploring on your own.

One quick note: Our thoughts below are in no particular order other than the order to which they occurred to us as we looked through the poll. And, away we go! Continue reading “9 deep(ish) thoughts on the new Washington Post-ABC News poll”

Jobless Rate Declines from 8.3% to 8.1%, 96,000 Jobs Added in August

The unemployment rate declined from 8.3 percent in July to 8.1 percent in August, with 96,000 jobs added last month, according to data out this morning from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The improvement in the unemployment rate was due to workers dropping out of the labor force, not to an increase in employed workers, according to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI).

Jobless rates for adult men stood at 7.6 percent; adult women, 7.3 percent; teenagers, 24.6 percent; white workers, 7.2 percent; African American workers, 14.1 percent; and Hispanics, 10.2 percent—all of these showed little or no change in August. Some Democratic campaigns think they have the votes of most federal employees in the bag, but it’s more complicated than one might think.

There’s been no shortage of Republican rhetoric about shrinking the government — even eliminating entire agencies — during this year’s presidential race. The Hill Poll: Voters say second term for Obama undeserved, country is worse off

By Sheldon Alberts – 09/04/12 05:00 AM ET

A majority of voters believe the country is worse off today than it was four years ago and that President Obama does not deserve reelection, according to a new poll for The Hill.

Fifty-two percent of likely voters say the nation is in “worse condition” now than in September 2008, while 54 percent say Obama does not deserve reelection based solely on his job performance.

Only 31 percent of voters believe the nation is in “better condition,” while 15 percent say it is “about the same,” the poll found. Just 40 percent of voters said Obama deserves reelection. Continue reading “The Hill Poll: Voters say second term for Obama undeserved, country is worse off”
