WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Saturday his Democratic-led chamber was certain to kill legislation moving through the House of Representatives to delay “Obamacare” for one year and repeal a medical device tax that would be attached to a government-funding bill.

“After weeks of futile political games from Republicans, we are still at square one: Republicans must decide whether to pass the Senate’s clean CR (continuing resolution to fund the government beyond September 30), or force a Republican government shutdown,” Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said in a statement.

The House is attempting to pass legislation on Saturday that Reid warned would be rejected in the Senate.

Momentum on Filibuster Reform

Today, activists will be delivering your message and thousands others to Sen. Dick Durbin and Sen. Mark Kirk in Washington, D.C.

Thanks to you, we are building momentum for significant changes to stop the misuse and abuse of the Senate filibuster.

But Sen. Dick Durbin and Sen. Mark Kirk need to hear from you TODAY, because some senators are pushing for a compromise that falls far short of what is needed to fix the filibuster problem. Call 1-866-937-5062 and tell them to publicly support strong rules reform by co-sponsoring Senate Resolution 4.

The filibuster used to be a way to draw attention to a critical issue. But now it’s abused as a tactic to take important bills off the table altogether.

Use of the procedural trick has skyrocketed in recent years, as corporate politicians have done everything possible to block popular progressive bills—even ones with majority support—from becoming law.

The only way we can hope to pass important legislation that’d shape a commonsense immigration process, stop rewarding corporations that offshore jobs or strengthen workers’ rights to make it easier for workers to organize for a voice on the job is to make it harder for a handful of senators to shut down debate.

Call your senators today at 1-866-937-5062 and tell them we want real reform of the Senate’s filibuster rule that ends the silent filibuster and keeps corporate politicians from blocking important legislation.

In Solidarity,

Nicole Aro
